A while ago, we had a puja in our home and we were going to have a huge gathering of our close family. My mom wanted to give out music CDs to everyone as a mark of remembrance of the occasion. Dad reminded us that we can’t distribute songs without permission. That’s where I stepped in and said “No problem, that’s why we have the Podsafe Music Network.”
So, in a single night, I digged up some really pleasing instrumental music from the Podsafe Music Network as well as the Magnatune website.
Here are the 13 songs that were recorded (on the 150 CDs):
‘Prelude and Fugue No. 1 in C Major, BWV 846: Fuga’ by Daniel Ben Pienaar
‘Prelude and Fugue No. 2 in C Minor, BWV 847: Praledium’ by Daniel Ben Pienaar
‘Adagio Sonata for Oboe and Basso Continuo in F (Besozzi)’ by Gonzalo X Ruiz
‘Premier Recreation de Musique (Leclair)’ by Brook Street Band
(Note that I had downloaded the Jazperience songs from the old mp3.com and it was under a shareable license as well)
The latter half of these songs are from Magnatune – I was happy to see a good collection of songs that are not “mainstream pop and R&B”, as well as freely allowing the songs to be downloaded under a Creative Commons license. Their slogan “We are not evil” kicks a**.
Many relatives told my mom that the songs were good and they liked it. Here’s three cheers to this vision of music being the universal language of openness and culture.
Sidebar: The Amarok Live CD features the Amarok music player playing licensed songs from Magnatune, as soon as you put the CD in your computer.
Sidebar 2: Courtney Love’s article on “piracy” is very revealing about how the music industry works.
Podcasts.Yahoo.com went live today.
It’ll help you find and listen to podcasts as well as create your own podcasts.
Many of my friends in Bangalore are part of the team that created this. Kudos to them for converting a concept to a product launch in an amazing short period!
Update : Interestingly, Yahoo! announced this via a podcast. Very appropriate.
The A R Rahman New Dimensional Tour came to Bangalore yesterday.

It rained heavily causing the show to start late by 2 hours. Sivamani played a small display of his amazing drums capabilities that kept the crowd satisfied till Rahman entered the stage. When the show did start, Rahman started off with the song from Yuva. After that, there were various songs sung by Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Alka Yagnik, Sadhna Sargam, Sukhwinder Singh, Chitra, Blaaze, … with Rahman playing the piano for most of the songs. Rahman did sing 3-4 songs himself.

Although I was disappointed with the selection of songs as well as the speakers system, there were a few good songs that were worth it. Listening to Hariharan sing ‘Roja Janeman’ live was alone worth it. There was also the Kannada version of ‘Kehna Hi Kya’ sung by Chitra, ‘Telephone Dhun’ by Hariharan, ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’ by Sukhwinder Singh, and of course, ‘Chale Chalo’ from Lagaan by Rahman himself.
It’s been 5 days since I saw the movie, but the title song of Amrithadhare is still playing on and on in my head. As far as I’m concerned, it’s going to be one of those classic songs.
Nee amrithadhare KoTi janma jothe gaathi Nee amrithadhare Ihaku paraku sangathi Nee illavaadare naa hege baaLali? …
About the movie… as usual, some scenes are outrageous, but overall, it’s a good movie to watch with a good message in the end. One of the high points is how Amitabh Bachchan figures in the story.
I’ll blame Adam Curry for getting me addicted to that podcast song. Just can’t get the tune out of my head.
My favorite part of the lyrics is:
You want it, you got it…just download it and pod it On a podcast…no one’s gonna stop ya Tell the FCC to stick it…kick it… The revolution’s on
It’s history, now you see, each and every nation Radio has got to go, it’s our emancipation Play that song, sing along, mash it up and mix it Radio was ____ ‘til Adam Curry fixed it
Mp3 killed the radio star…
PodcastAwards is a neat site to find good podcasts.
Maybe I’ll vote for CoverVille.
I’m also downloading some podcasts that play podsafe Jazz music.
It’s funny how podcasting is such a great brand word that is helping Apple even though it isn’t specific to iPods. After all, you can just play the mp3s on your computer.
… you end up with this:
My flow is so intense that I will overflow your buffer, Corrupt your stack pointer makin’ all your data suffer. I’ve got saturated edges but your flow is sparser, Real gangstas sip on Yacc; instead you generate a parser. While you’re busy poppin’ stacks I’ll pop a cap in your skull, While you smoke your crack pipe I’m gonna pipe you to /dev/null. I may not have a label but I rap like a star; I’m an unsigned long int and you’re an 8-bit char.

So, Jacko might leave America… he is no longer popular or admired but he’s still the King of Pop music.
So, I wrote this following so-called ode on a whim. It’s up to you to decide what to make of it…..
MJ has become a ghost of himself but now he can scream that he is not guilty. Is it scary? Bad? Maybe he’s history. Might as well be a stranger in moscow on morphine. Might be a smooth criminal singing PYT and thinking Another part of me. And he says to the tabloid junkie_s, _leave me alone. There may be no blood on the dance floor, he may not be dangerous, but he is gone too soon in the closet. Jacko, just remember the time and this time around, come together and beat it to say it doesn’t matter whether you’re black or white, it is just human nature and what people want is a thriller. Just look at the man in the mirror and ask about the way he makes you feel and tell him give in to me. In the end, just keep the faith, keep jam_ming, and _smile
The Unofficial Yahoo Weblog has a neat post on the Yahoo! Music Engine. Apparently, it even provides a Unix-style shell to access your music!
Did you know that the Yahoo! Music Engine (affectionately called YME) supports RSS playlists?
Excerpt:
This is extraordinary from Yahoo!’s viewpoint. To whatever extent things like this catch on, people will be strongly guided to the Yahoo! Music Engine to hear the music, and to Music Unlimited subscription to create their own playlist blogs.
I’ve had a few conversations today with friends from other teams. Believe me when I say, you ain’t seen nothing yet
