Is Open Source the solution?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2005

Should Yahoo! open up its messenger protocol? Does Google really follow its ‘Do no evil’ philosophy? Should government and public data be allowed to be handled by proprietary software? Is open source the solution always? Is using non-freedom software detrimental? The big debate is here.

Prince of Ayodhya

Tuesday, February 15th, 2005

I just finished reading the book ‘Prince of Ayodhya’, the first volume of a series of books which are a modern re-telling of the great Ramayana by Ashok Banker.

The book is simply awesome. I was totally raptured by it and am still in awe of the story. I just had to read the book when I caught sight of it in the library, and needless to say, I’m happy I chanced upon it.

For those who don’t know, the original Ramayana was written three thousand years ago by Sage Valmiki. The story revolves around the noble Prince Rama of the kingdom of Ayodhya (and his family) and Ravana, the evil demon and Dark Lord of Lanka. It is a proverbial fight of good versus evil but will a 16-year old prince be able to face and fight the wrath of the 7-headed evil lord who has gained many boons from the gods with his austere prayers, including immortality? Well, you will have to read the book to find out!

I have seen many circles of friends discuss many books, but I did not get to hear about Indian books and authors that much, but this is one particular book (and series) that I am surely going to be raving about. I am glad to know a bit more of Indian mythology and our own history and culture.

I give the book a 9/10. The 1 point is down simply because its a 7-book series and the last 3 volumes are not published yet! What I really like about the book is the way the characters are etched and described. They seem so ‘human’.

Also, more good news – I read on his website that Ashok Banker has already started to work on the other great Indian epic – the longest epic ever written, the Mahabharata.

What I would really like to see as well is a real inspiring movie on the Ramayana as well, something with the vision and inspiration and fascination that Peter Jackson brought alive in the ‘Lord of the Rings’. Is that a bit too much to expect? I don’t know. I think we’re better off not having a movie at all rather than someone try to make it and make a total mockery out of it. Well, that’s the pessimist in me speaking; even then, until such a thing happens (and I doubt it ever will), the excellent books by Banker are here and I’m enjoying every moment of it.

Update : OH MY GOD! … Notice the time I published this post – a good half an hour after midnight. Today morning, mom called me for breakfast. I am not in the habit of reading the newspaper (too much negative news, too few positive developments) but since I didn’t have a book to read (remember, I just finished reading one), I picked up the newspaper to read. I see Bangalore Times and notice the top story – Dramayana 2005:

New Age guru Deepak Chopra and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, along with Chopra’s son Gotham and Sharad Devarajan of the Gotham Entertainment group, have created a global development company. Gotham Studios, which will churn out a number of comic book projects, the first being Kapur and Chopra’s interpretation of the Ramayana.

Devarajan says the Ramayana project will be Asia’s Lord Of The Rings. "We also envision turning it into a landmark major movie".

Read the full article with sneak peek sketches.

I am still recovering from the shock of the coincidence. Here, I thought a Ramayana movie like LOTR and Matrix would be so good. Here, Shekhar Kapur and gang have big plans for the same!

I am praying and hoping that he makes a good movie. He better not muck it up.

Update : Just got ‘Siege of Mithila’ (Book Two of the Ramayana) from the library :D

Lovaria epidemic

Monday, February 14th, 2005

Today is Valentine’s Day but the crass commercialization sickens me.

I don’t have a girlfriend but nonetheless I’ll still dedicate a song to whoever steps in to my life in future ;)

This is ‘Beautiful Soul’ by Jesse McCartney :

I don’t want another pretty face I don’t want just anyone to hold I don’t want my love to go to waste I want you and your beautiful soul You’re the one I wanna chase You’re the one I wanna hold I wont let another minute go to waste I want you and your beautiful soul

I know that you are something special To you I’d be always faithful I want to be what you always needed Then I hope you’ll see the heart in me

Wikipedia to get Googlified?

Friday, February 11th, 2005

I got to know from the grapevine that Google has offered hosting for Wikimedia projects. See the discussion page for user views and add your own thoughts if you like.

In case, you already didn’t know, Wikipedia is a free excellent community-driven encyclopedia. It isn’t surprising that Wikipedia has replaced most of my searches. I recently wanted to know more about the saxophone, so I directly entered http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxophone in my browser and read all about it. No search, no fuss. Maybe that’s why Google got interested in it…

As somebody pointed out in the discussion page:

Google undoubtly sees itself as the main – if not sole – dealer of information, in the forthcoming age of information trafficing. If this is the case (and only those who have seen the actual offer can say that), I’d say wikimedia should resist the offer.

Its great that Google has offerred hosting to Wikipedia and I don’t think I have a reason to be have any negative thoughts about it, but in a world of takeovers, I just hope they don’t have any other plans about it. This is a sincere wish of a Wikipedia user and contributor.

Sidenote : I am listening to SmoothJazz online radio, they play real good instrumental music.

Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox

Thursday, February 10th, 2005

The Yahoo Toolbar for Firefox (beta) is released! This is handy for me since I use Yahoo Mail, Calendar, AddressBook and Notepad a lot. Two features I liked are ‘Search only the current site’ and the bookmarks integration.

The only downside is that it takes up a chunk of screen estate (of course).

On an unrelated note, check out the new Yahoo! Music logo – me liiiike! :)

Note: The toolbar page says ‘Requires Firefox 1.0 for Windows’ but its working fine for me on Linux. The beta release notes has more info.

Update: I just noticed that Google has a IE-only toolbar.

A Blogful of Work

Thursday, February 10th, 2005

The blogosphere is full of news about Mark Jen getting fired from Google for blogging. Zawodny has the full scoop.

The part that interested me the most is what Jeremy Cole had to say about it. I have been unknowingly following his three rules on what (and what not) to blog about work.

Also, Zawodny says:

Aside for the normal agreements that one signs as a Yahoo employee, we have no additional policies or rules about blogging. But we’re working on something: a set of guidelines that are very much in line with those used by Sun Microstems. The idea is to let all employees know that it’s okay to blog about life at Yahoo, as long as you’re smart about it.

My take: There have been so many moments for me where I discover something cool that’s happening at Yahoo and I go ‘Damn! I wish I could blog about this’… in fact, I could easily write two or three sentences about the upcoming stuff right here… but I would get fired as well. So, I’ll control myself.

P.S. Its been so many days since I last played foozball with my colleagues that I have lost touch of it ; and the guys in the next cubicle are getting better and better at the guitar everyday… also I’m getting spoilt by the sweets/chocolates that are at somebody’s desk or the other….

Update : Russell has a tip for new Yahoo employees ;)

Why I prefer KDE over GNOME

Wednesday, February 9th, 2005

Praveen says that GNOME is better but I don’t think I will switch from KDE anytime soon. I know this is the start of a holy war, in spite of that, here is why I prefer KDE over GNOME :

  • Lots of good applications – Kate, Konsole, Quanta Plus, K3B, KSysGuard, Cervisia, KSnapshot, and many many more. Show me some reasonably good equivalents in the GNOME world. I’ve come across none.

  • Konqueror rocks – A web browser, file explorer, FTP client, manpage viewer, etc, etc all rolled into one.

  • Integration – Because of the KPart system, I can view zip files or read text within Konqueror and without the need to open another application. Also, all settings can be changed from a single Control Center.

  • OK and Cancel buttons are in the right order – yes, this is a serious usability issue for me.

  • IMHO, KDE is faster and more stable than GNOME. Also, Qt applications tend to be more lightweight and more stable than Gtk applications. For example, compare Kontact and Evolution, KDevelop and Anjuta, and the best comparison of all, Konsole and gnome-terminal.

  • KDE works well on FreeBSD whereas GNOME comes lacking in this respect. I know this doesn’t particularly apply to me but in a company like Y! where almost all of the developers are on FreeBSD, this matters.

  • Upcoming KDE 4 will make you switch back to KDE. Period.

So, all ye Linux and BSD users, which is your choice?

Conclusion: The Free and Open Source Software community is all about choice. Its a good thing (TM) that we have choices – KDE, GNOME, XFCE, Enlightenment, etc. You can choose what you like and use it. Freedom to choose matters.
